Tuesday Morning
Mason was not graced with the pleasure of sleeping until the afternoon sun. He was, however, granted the second best sleep he'd had in ages. No tossing, no turning, no grumbling, or fumbling. Not even one internal rant at his propped watch for daring to display the time. So though he rose with the birds, he happily saluted Jack's shut bedroom door and tripped down the stairs like a spring fawn. He made coffee; he lit a fire. He watched the news and he flipped through a magazine. He pulled out eggs and ham, grilling the meat and setting water in a pan to simmer so he could poach eggs when he heard life from the upper level. He was dredging seeds out of a cantaloupe when he heard the first floorboard squeak. He was smiling to himself, cutting the fruit into thin crescents, when he heard the shower start. By the time he was scooping and draining the eggs from the water, Mason couldn't wipe the wide grin off his face. This was fun. He liked having Jack around—the simple things that made a person happy for seemingly no reason, like cooking for someone or waiting for them to walk into the room. It had been too long.
"Good God, man," Jack grumbled from the doorway.
"Must you get up so early?" His hair was a tousle of freshly showered disorder, his chest was bare and his expression a full-fledged scowl. He clutched a pack of cigarettes in one hand and his lighter in the other as if they were life-support equipment.

"I didn't tell you to get out of bed!"
Jack snorted and headed for the deck. "No one can sleep when there's ham being cooked in the house, Mason. No one. You're evil."
Mason called out a sarcastic thank-you over his shoulder, setting Jack's plate aside so he could concentrate on the pair of eggs he had frying for himself. He was mid-flip of the first egg when Jack stepped back in and Mason's cell phone started ringing.
Jack peered at the phone, smirked, and picked it up.
"I'll get it for you."
"No, that's all—" Toast popped beside him, the egg started to slip on the spatula, and Jack was already thumbing the screen to accept the call.
"Good morning."
Mason hurried to reseat the egg, flipped the other one and removed the pan from the heat. "I'll take it—"
"He's making me eggs." Jack wiggled his eyebrows and pointed at the toast, tilting the phone away from his cheek to speak instead to Mason. "Greg says to tell you that he has tickets."
Why the thought of Jack talking to Greg made butterflies wake up in Mason's stomach, he wasn't really sure. "I'll be right there."
"Take care of your toast," Jack said, dropping into a kitchen chair. "Mason won't be back until the weekend. So he'll have to decline your offer I'm afraid."
"He knows—"
"I see," Jack continued, ignoring Mason's attempt at distraction. "You know, I haven't really known him for long but I wouldn't take him to be a baseball kind of guy.
